Victoria’s fire services, together with Duracell batteries, are urging all householders to change their smoke alarm batteries on Sunday 7th April as part of the annual Change Your Clock, Change Your Smoke Alarm Batteries campaign.
A new fire safety survey has found 38 per cent of Victorian/Tasmanian family homes have only one smoke alarm installed and 28 per cent sometimes disconnect their smoke alarm or take out batteries to prevent false alarms.
The Riddells Creek Fire Brigade respond to house fires on more than one occasion each year and in many cases, the homeowners had been made aware of the fires thanks to a working smoke alarm. “Having a working smoke alarm is such a simple life-saving device” said Dean Anderson, brigade Community Safety Manager. “Taking a moment to change the battery over on April 7th may only take a few minutes, but making the time to do this could save the lives of you and your family”.
