When you Change Your Clock, Change Your Smoke Alarm Battery

When you Change Your Clock, Change Your Smoke Alarm Battery

Victoria’s fire services are urging all householders to change their smoke alarm batteries on Sunday 3rd April 2016 as part of the annual Change Your Clock, Change Your Smoke Alarm Batteries campaign.

In Victoria alone there were over 3,200 preventable house fires in 2015.

If you do not have a working smoke alarm in your home and a fire occurs, you are:

  • 57% more likely to suffer property damage;

  • 26% more likely to suffer serious injury, and;

  • 4 times more likely to die.

The Riddells Creek Fire Brigade respond to house fires on more than one occasion each year and in many cases, the homeowners had been made aware of the fires thanks to a working smoke alarm. “Having a working smoke alarm is such a simple life-saving device” said Dean Anderson, brigade Community Safety Manager. “Taking a moment to change the battery over on April 3rd may only take a few minutes, but making the time to do this could save the lives of you and your family”.
